As part of the “week of Mac” announcements, we welcomed yesterday’s M4 iMac and today’s M4 Mac mini. Featuring the new Apple M4 Pro chip with up to 64GB of unified memory, it is a direct successor to last year’s M2 Mac mini.
Unlike the Mac Studio, the new Mac mini has a much smaller footprint at just 12.7cm (5 inches) per side, following in the footsteps of the Mac Studio. Although it is a bit taller than the M2 Mac mini at 5cm, it weighs only 670 grams for the M4 model and 730 grams for the M4 Pro model.
On the front are two USB-C ports along with a headphone jack; on the back, there are three Thunderbolt ports (Thunderbolt 4 on the M4 model, Thunderbolt 5 on the M4 Pro), a HDMI port, a Gigabit Ethernet port (10Gb is an optional upgrade), and a power input. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 are also included.
There will be two versions of the new Mac mini, the previously announced M4 chip and the more capable M4 Pro chip.
M4 Pro is available in two configurations – the base model comes with a 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU, while the higher-end model comes with a 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU. There are 10 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores on the standard M4 chip.
Depending on the trim, the new Mac mini can be configured with up to 64GB of unified memory and up to 8TB of storage. Apple Intelligence is supported and it ships with macOS Sequoia.
