The Samsung Developer Conference 2024 is underway right now, kicking off with the company’s keynote announcement. Today there were a lot of expectations, but perhaps the biggest was regarding One UI 7. We now have some answers, even if they weren’t what we expected.

Samsung will introduce Android 15 to its Galaxy family through One UI 7, and it feels like Android 15’s rollout has been slow. Samsung doesn’t seem to have its own public beta program, and the new Pixels didn’t come with it. Samsung confirms that the One UI 7 beta is still coming, but does not provide a firmer ETA beyond saying it will arrive before the end of 2024.

We’re curious if internal timetables may have slipped a little due to a lack of greater specificity, especially this late in the game. One UI 7 is Samsung’s major relaunch of its interface, adopting “purposeful simplicity” and introducing a new look to the app grid on the home screen. We’re also less than three months from 2025, and Samsung isn’t even tying things down to a specific date.

One UI 7’s final release date is also a huge shocker. Samsung has confirmed that One UI 7 will not be available until next year’s Galaxy S25, even though One UI 6 left beta last October and started arriving as updates last month.

This is a major shift for Samsung, and we wonder if the extra time will allow it to present a more polished product, but it might also lead to the emergence of more One UI features as features of upcoming flagship hardware, with exclusivity. It may be getting ahead of ourselves, but Samsung is certainly in uncharted territory here.
