Next year, the iPhone 17 could be the first phone to run on a 2nm process. A report from Chou News Agency says TSMC can manufacture the 2nm chipsets, but it will need help packaging them for use in devices.
It has been quite some time since TSMC initially demonstrated 2nm chipsets to Apple in December of 2023. Trial production was scheduled to begin in July, ahead of schedule. Other Taiwanese reports suggest that Apple might have reserved all of TSMC’s 2nm capacity. With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple first used 3nm chips.
It is likely that the new 2nm chips will only be available on iPhone 17 Pro models and will be called the A19 Pro. This makes sense, especially if Apple can’t get enough chips. Since the “Pro” models are typically higher-end and more expensive.
Particularly in smaller devices like phones, a 2nm chipset can offer many advantages. In other words, the physical size of the chipset will be smaller than a 3nm chip such as the A18 Pro. Furthermore, it means better performance and efficiency in such a small space, allowing Apple to put in a larger battery.
