Apple has reportedly been developing its own 5G modem for iPhones to reduce reliance on Qualcomm. For years, the company has been working toward this goal. Apple acquired Intel’s 5G modem division in 2019, further fueling speculation about a homegrown solution.
We may be nearing the end of these efforts now. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a supply chain expert who is known for his reliable insights, Apple’s in-house modem plans are progressing.
In 2026, Apple is expected to ship 90-110 million devices with its own 5G modem, while 160-180 million devices in 2027 will ship with Apple’s own 5G modem. This development could also hurt Qualcomm’s 5G chip shipments and licensing revenue.
Apple’s 5G modem will debut in two iPhone models in 2025, Kuo said back in July. Apple is expected to launch the iPhone SE 4 in the first quarter of next year, as well as the ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air in the third quarter of 2025.
It has always been Apple’s goal to control every aspect of its hardware ecosystem. The company could improve the integration between iPhones and their cellular connectivity if it developed its modem.
It has also been rumoured that Apple will combine the modem with its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips into one unit. The battery life and overall efficiency of the device could be improved as a result.
