Now that HMD has confirmed a global launch date for the HMD Barbie on August 28th, its specs and renders have appeared on TENAA’s website.
It was clear when HMD first introduced this phone earlier this year that it would be a classic feature flip phone rather than a smartphone. This is confirmed by the TENAA certification.
As can be seen from the photos, the actual device is an uninspired feature phone that focuses more on brand recognition than innovation. It looks like something my sister might have wished for when she was completing her Barbie collection.
Underwhelming specifications are to be expected. There is a 2.8-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels on the phone. There is also a secondary display, which is even smaller at 1.77 inches with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels, but we could not locate it in TENAA’s images.
It features a single-core SoC clocked at 1.05GHz, 64MB of RAM, and 128MB of internal storage. Besides basic calling and texting, this setup is unlikely to support much else.
MicroSD cards can be used to expand storage up to 32GB, and 4G LTE connectivity is available. With the user-replaceable back cover, the 1450mAh battery can be easily swapped. There is a single rear camera with an LED flash for basic photography.
Unsurprisingly, the overall design leans heavily into the Barbie aesthetic. Barbie’s logo is prominently displayed on the lid of the phone, which is a vibrant shade of pink. There’s a silver finish on the back, though. The device measures 108 x 55 x 18.9 mm and weighs 123 grams.
