Despite one intriguing new detail, Mark Gurman reiterates that new Mac models with the M4 chip will launch later this year. Also in 2025, MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro will receive M4 updates.
At Apple’s “Scary Fast” event last October, the MacBook Pro and iMac models were updated with M3 processors. New Space Black finishes were applied to the MacBook Pro, as well as an entry-level model that replaced the old 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. However, the included Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard did not transition to USB-C. These accessories remain compatible with Lightning.
Gurman does not expect much other than the introduction of new M4 chips with a new update coming this fall. In May, the M4 chip was first seen in the iPad Pro, although no Mac models have received the chip as of yet. It is also likely that the 24-inch iMac model with M4 later this year will include USB-C accessories in its box because the iMac still uses Lightning accessories.
We will also see an update to the Mac mini later this year, which is somewhat more interesting. In January 2023, the Mac mini was last updated, skipping the M3 series of chips. As part of that refresh, they introduced a new model of Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip, but other than that, it was a relatively minor update.
