The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 may have spoiled Qualcomm’s surprise announcement at tomorrow’s ‘Snapdragon for India’ event – here are the details. Compared to last year’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, this is a lower-power, cheaper model.

The chip still has an octa-core CPU (two Cortex-A78 plus six A55), but the clock speeds have been slowed by 200MHz. As well as the CPU, the GPU probably took a step back. In addition, only 2,133MHz LPDDR4X RAM is supported (the non-s model can also use 5X at 3,200MHz). Performance-wise, it should fall between the original Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and the 4 Gen 2, but it should be more efficient.

The display support has also been reduced to a 90Hz refresh rate at FHD+ resolution. To keep costs down, either HD+ displays at 120Hz or FHD+ displays at 90Hz will be used. Dual ISPs cannot support 108MP image sensors either, so manufacturers will likely settle for 50MP or 64MP.

The downlink speed has been limited to 1Gbps (down from 2.5Gbps) and the 5G capabilities have been scaled back compared to the 4 Gen 2. It is another matter of whether there is a tangible difference in daily use. With support for older Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5.1 standards, local connectivity is relatively limited, but the same applies to the 4 Gen 2 (these are 4-series chips).

In addition to Qualcomm Audio and Voice Communication, the chip supports 96kHz music streaming. The camera features multi-frame noise reduction and EIS, as well as dual-frequency GPS reception.
