An alarming rumor has surfaced today – alarming for those who believe in the belief described above. The iPhone 17 in 2025 will include Apple’s own anti-reflective Gorilla Glass Armor, inspired by Samsung’s Gorilla Glass Armor on the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
The new Asian rumor, the iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than Apple’s Ceramic Shield. According to a Chinese Weibo leaker, Instant Digital, the iPhone 17 will have a “super-hard anti-reflective layer” that is “more scratch-resistant than you think.” The coating equipment has just been handed over to China’s supply chain, but not in time for this year’s iPhone 16.
In collaboration with Apple, Corning developed a glass-ceramic material called Ceramic Shield. Samsung recently announced the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which uses Corning’s Gorilla Glass Armor display panel. In comparison with conventional glass panels, Corning’s Armor panel cuts reflections by 75 percent, and it is resistant to micro-scratches. As compared with competitive aluminosilicate cover glasses, Corning says its panels are four times as scratch-resistant.
Apple isn’t saying whether Gorilla Glass Armor will be used on the iPhone 17, but the description matches the Chinese leaker’s claims. It is also possible that Corning will supply Apple with a similar technology that will be branded differently.
