There are no AI-generating features in Apple’s product lineup, especially the prized iPhone series. Meanwhile, Google’s Pixel series has been loaded with AI features, including Gemini AI. The Galaxy S24 series, which launches on January 17, is also expected to include several AI features. It looks like Apple will add some AI-focused features to its iPhones this year.
Mark Gurman reports in Bloomberg’s ‘Power On’ newsletter that Apple could announce generative AI-based tools for its products at WWDC 2024, which typically takes place in June.
Apple plans to introduce generative AI-based tools for iPhone and other products in 2024, according to Gurman. According to Bloomberg, these features will be introduced in iOS 18. There are several AI-based features that Apple will add, including auto-summarizing, app auto-complete, and Apple Music AI integration, according to the report. Additionally, AI-based developer tools will be introduced by the company.
According to Gurman, Apple has been developing a proprietary Large Language Model (LLM) called Ajax since early 2023. Apple is developing LLM mainly to introduce AI features to Macs and iPhones, and to seamlessly integrate AI into its services like Apple Music, Siri, and core apps. In spite of this, Apple might opt for a gradual rollout, which is not surprising given Cupertino’s cautious approach to technology.
According to Gurman, Apple’s AI vision will be fully realized by 2025, so not all announcements will be made this year.
In addition to AI development, Gurman outlined Apple’s product roadmap, which starts with the much-anticipated Apple Vision Pro in February. Afterward, the refreshed iPad Pros with OLED displays, M3 SoCs, and more will be launched, he says. A larger 12.9-inch iPad Air might also be launched in March by Apple.
