For the last few years, Apple has been working on ways to reduce its reliance on China. Since the beginning, its Made in India iPhone plans have only expanded. Apple is said to be working on increasing Made in India iPhone capacity in the near future. Additionally, it wants to start iPhone 17 development there before China.
Known industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared interesting details about Apple’s iPhone development plans. Apple wants to double its Made in India iPhone production capacity in a year, he says.
12-14% of the global iPhone shipments in 2023 will be made in India, according to the research note. By 2024, they want it to be 20-25%. Everything has to fall into place for Apple to achieve this goal. Foxconn’s facilities in Zhengzhou and Taiyuan, China are also expected to reduce iPhone production by 35-45% and 75-85%, respectively.
Kuo says production of the iPhone 17 will start in India during the second half of 2024. It’ll be the first time Apple develops an iPhone outside China if everything goes well. It’s coming out in the second half of 2025. According to the company, the vanilla iPhone was chosen because it was “lower-difficult to design.”
In India, Foxconn accounts for 75-80% of iPhone production. Since it’s one of Apple’s oldest iPhone manufacturers, it’s got all the experience, technological know-how, and resources. In the near future, Tata Group, an Indian conglomerate, will begin making iPhones in India.
