Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones should launch later this year. It’s been a while since we’ve seen glimpses of the Pixel 8 series, so the details are still scarce. With 91mobiles, tipster Kuba Wojciechowski shared a video that reveals the Pixel 8 Pro’s full design and also demonstrates how it can be used as a thermometer.
Like the Pixel 7 Pro, the Pixel 8 Pro has a punch-hole front camera. Google has bundled all three cameras inside the pill-shaped module at the back. On the back, there’s one separate camera and two together. The metal frame housing the camera module also looks like the Pixel 7 Pro.
There’s a new sensor just below the LED flash, which makes it different. This is an infrared thermometer sensor that measures your body temperature. It’s like what most contactless thermometers use. We can see a clear demonstration of how the Pixel 8 Pro’s thermometer works in the video.
Make sure there are no accessories on your forehead or skin before you locate the white sensor. Bring the Pixel 8 Pro as close to your forehead as you can without touching your skin. After you tap the start button, move the phone towards your temple within five seconds. Your phone will vibrate and you’ll see your temperature once it’s measured.
Due to the sensor requirement, the built-in thermometer will only work on the Pixel 8 Pro. Aside from measuring body temperature, the Pixel 8 Pro can also measure objects’ temperatures. The data collected will be stored locally and handled by Android Private Compute Core. It’s already being tested by Googlers.
