The Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 chipsets were announced today. SD 6 Gen 1 has a 4nm manufacturing process, while SD 4 Gen 1 has a 6nm process. This quarter, the SD 4 Gen 1 is expected to make its debut, while the SD 6 Gen 1 is expected to arrive in Q1 2023.

Due to Qualcomm’s lack of details, we only know that the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1’s main cores will reach 2.2GHz, while the SD 4 Gen 1’s CPU will cap out at 2.0GHz. In both cases, eight cores are offered, but they have different architectures and powerful/efficient breakdowns. Also, there is no mention of the Adreno GPUs used.
Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 would boost graphics performance by 35% and computational performance by 40%, but didn’t elaborate. There is a 15% increase in CPU speed and a 10% increase in GPU power in the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1. Due to the lack of other 400 chipsets, we assume this comparison is to the Snapdragon 480/480+.
Spectra Triple ISP supports native HDR image capturing and 200MP cameras on Snapdragon 6 Gen 1. Video in HDR is also available. It uses the 7th generation Qualcomm AI Engine to help with the bokeh effect, general performance, and energy efficiency.
In addition to Wi-Fi 6E, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is equipped with a Snapdragon X62 5G modem, which is the fourth generation.
Despite not being the latest AI Engine, Qualcomm’s AI Engine is used on SD 4 Gen 1. A 120Hz FHD+ display with Variable Rate Shading can now be supported by the new hardware.
In the 4 Gen 1, the Multi-frame Noise Reduction technology is used to take care of noise, and the Spectra Triple ISP can handle 108MP cameras. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X51 5G modem provides 5G connectivity, but it doesn’t support Wi-Fi 6E. In three weeks, iQOO’s upcoming Z6 Lite smartphone will debut with the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and become available globally.
