The iPhone 14 Pro series with dual punch holes will be announced later this year. But ultimately Apple will move to an under-display (UD) solution to free up further screen space. TheElec reports Samsung Display and OTI Lumionics are creating a new UD camera that will debut on the Galaxy Z Fold5 next year and later make its way to Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro (tentative name) models in 2023.
According to reports, Samsung Display has partnered with OTI Lumionics, which has developed a new type of organic cathode patterning material (CPM). This enables micro-transparent windows to open in OLED cathode layers. Apple can then install its FaceID sensors under the display as a result of the display being transparent. When unlocking the display, the IR sensor will work as it does now. This leaves the display with no notch and no cutouts.
