Samsung has finally introduced its custom flagship chipset for the upcoming Galaxy S22 series with Exynos 2200 SoC. The new Exynos 2200 SoC turns out to be the world’s first mobile processor coming with AMD GPU. This newly designed mobile processor has a powerful AMD RDNA 2 graphics processing unit (GPU) based on Samsung Xclipse technology. The Exynos 2200 will be able to deliver the best mobile phone gaming experience and enhance the overall experience in social media apps and photography through its cutting-edge Arm-based CPU cores and its upgraded neural processing unit (NPU).

AMD GPU:

The Xclipse GPU is a unique hybrid graphic processor that sits between consoles and mobile devices. Xclipse combines the letter ‘X’ which represents Exynos, with the word eclipse.

The Xclipse, powered by AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture, inherits advanced graphics features previously only available on PCs, laptops, and consoles, such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS).

In the real world, light behaves in a way that is closely modeled by ray tracing. Ray tracing produces realistic lighting effects by calculating the movement and color of light rays as they bounce off surfaces. Samsung and AMD have collaborated to develop the industry’s first-ever hardware-accelerated ray tracing for mobile GPUs to offer the best graphics and user experiences.

By applying lower shading rates where quality will not be impacted, variable-rate shading optimizes GPU workload. In turn, the GPU can focus on areas most important to gamers and improve frame-rate for smoother gameplay. AMIGO (Advanced Multi-IP Governor) is another advanced feature of the Xclipse GPU that enhances overall performance and efficiency.

Specs:

In terms of performance and security, Armv9 offers a measurable improvement over Armv8 in today’s mobile devices. Both of which are critical in today’s mobile communications. Arm’s Exynos 2200 is one of the first processors to integrate Arm’s latest Armv9 CPU cores.
Exynos 2200 has an octa-core CPU designed in a tri-cluster architecture consisting of a single powerful Arm Cortex-X2 flagship-core, three balanced Cortex-A710 big-cores, and four power-efficient Cortex-A510 little-cores.
With the Exynos 2200, on-device AI (artificial intelligence) is more powerful. With double the performance of its predecessor. The NPU allows for more calculations in parallel and enhances AI performance. In addition to power-efficient INT8 (8-bit integer) and INT16, the NPU now supports FP16 (16-bit floating-point).
Additionally, the Exynos 2200 includes a fast 3GPP Release 16 5G modem. It supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave (millimeter wave) spectrum bands. A modem that uses E-UTRAN New Radio – Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) can boost speed up to 10Gbps by utilizing both 4G LTE and 5G NR signals.
Exynos 2200 has an Integrated Secure Element (iSE) to store private cryptographic keys and act as a Root of Trust (RoT). Additionally, the UFS (user file system) and the DRAM (data memory) have inline encryption HW to ensure that user data encryption is only shared within secure domains.

Camera/ISP:

With the redesigned image signal processor (ISP) of Exynos 2200, ultra-high-resolution image sensors of up to 200 megapixels (MP) are supported. With 30 frames-per-second (fps), the ISP can support up to 108 MP with a single camera and up to 64+36 MP with dual cameras. For advanced multi-camera setups, it can also connect up to seven image sensors at the same time. ISPs support up to 4K HDR (or 8K) video recording.

The ISP and the NPU work together to deliver more refined and realistic results utilizing a content-aware AI camera. The AI camera recognizes the environment, faces, and multiple objects in a scene when it takes a picture. A professional-level image is then produced by applying optimal settings for color, white balance, exposure, dynamic range, and more.

Multi-format codecs (MFC) in the Exynos 2200 support video in high-resolution 8K. Encodes videos up to 4K at 120fps and decodes up to 4K at 240fps. It decodes videos up to 8K at 60fps. A power-efficient AV1 decoder is also built into the MFC, providing longer playback times. With HDR10+, the display offers a higher dynamic range and deeper colors, as well as a 144Hz refresh rate for a more responsive experience during scrolling and gaming.

Exynos 2200 is in mass production now.
