It’s finally occurring. Combining Oxygen OS with Oppo’s Color OS will provide a “unified and improved global operating system.” In a recent media conference, OnePlus revealed that its next flagship, likely the OnePlus 10, would be the first phone to use the fully integrated operating system.
“In June, Oxygen OS and Color OS integrated their codebases. This is the start of creating a single operating system for OnePlus and Oppo customers. Following the introduction of the 2022 flagship, “the unified operating system will be rolled out worldwide with the big Android upgrade in 2022,” stated OnePlus CEO Pete Lau.
OnePlus’ newest blog post also indicates that the “unified” operating system would completely replace Oxygen OS on flagship phones. We asked OnePlus whether the OS will get a new moniker, but got no response.
“We have chosen to combine the Oxygen OS and Color OS teams to design the future software experience together,” OnePlus states. The firm says the change was made because the two operating systems’ user interfaces converged.
Oxygen OS CEO Gary Chen will manage the worldwide unified operating system.
Oxygen OS and Color OS will stay distinct on worldwide OnePlus smartphones, according to the company’s newest statement. This may annoy OnePlus enthusiasts, but Lau promises a clean and lightweight experience on the new OS.
The unified operating system will retain the DNA of Oxygen OS that many of you enjoy while providing you an improved overall experience. In addition, we will tailor the unified OS for OnePlus devices to suit your needs,” the CEO said in a blog post.
So there may be some software changes between OnePlus and Oppo phones, but we won’t know until they debut.
OnePlus has announced that the new unified operating system will be available on the OnePlus 8 series. By extension, it should also arrive at the OnePlus 9 flagships. OnePlus hasn’t committed to bringing the new OS to previous OnePlus phones. They will, however, continue to get Oxygen OS upgrades as promised.
Nobody knows when the new unified OS will hit the OnePlus Nord and R smartphones. The latter may still receive the update, but the former is unlikely. Oppo flagships coming in 2022 should also feature the new unified OS.
According to Android Authority, the firm intends to release Oxygen OS 12 soon after Android 12. OnePlus devices will also continue to support unlocked bootloaders as usual.
