ISOCELL Dual, ISOCELL Slim, ISOCELL

As of 2019, Samsung was the first company to mass-produce 108MP mobile camera sensors. ISOCELL HP1 is the first 200MP camera sensor for smartphones and was introduced by the company last week. The company, however, has higher goals in mind. A South Korean firm unveiled a 600MP camera sensor last year, but it will be a while before it is available.

During his presentation at the SEMI Summit, Haechang Lee, Senior VP Automotive Sensor at Samsung Electronics, displayed an interesting slide. Since 2000, pixel size and resolution trends of camera sensors are shown in the slide. This report indicates that a 576MP camera sensor will be released by a South Korean firm in 2025. The sensor might not be found inside smartphones, however. As opposed to smartphones, Samsung’s upcoming camera sensor is slated to be used in automobiles.

Samsung noted on its website earlier that the human eye corresponds to a resolution of around 500MP, and doesn’t intend to stop there. Although it may be capable of that feat, a 576MP sensor might not always be a good match for smartphones. Instead, sensors such as these might be used in self-driving vehicles, drones, and medical equipment. Such high-resolution sensors would also require ultra-powerful chips to process images and videos.
