Samsung is rumored to be preparing to launch its first tri-fold device later this year. According to reports, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy foldable will feature two in-folding hinges similar to its Flex G concept. At MWC, the company once again displayed this concept phone, but it’s not the most interesting foldable display.
At the ongoing trade show, Samsung has announced a dual-folding flip phone alongside the Flex G and Flex S concepts. Stylishly titled Asymmetric Flip, this concept phone looks like the Galaxy Z Flip but has two inward-folding hinges placed at different lengths from the edges. The hinge placement leaves a slim portion of the display exposed when folded.
This exposed screen area may act as an Always-on Display since the phone does not have a cover screen. The Galaxy Z Flip lineup already has a great design, so we don’t see how this could be even better.
Samsung’s foldable gaming handheld does not make much sense, but its Asymmetric Flip design does. With a hinge in the middle, it folds in half like a sleek Nintendo Switch. When closed, the device has joysticks on either side that fit neatly into hollowed-out circular D-pads.
While it’s a cool concept we hope Samsung eventually brings to market, it could be improved. The device’s display crease is prominent and may lead to a less-than-ideal gaming experience. For better ergonomics, Samsung should also make it thicker. A larger battery would also ensure longer, uninterrupted gaming sessions.
