The foldable iPhone has become a mythic creature, but hearing about the latest developments is interesting. The latest one is all about the hinge. According to a tipster on Weibo who has a good track record regarding Apple-related news, Apple is designing its hinge with liquid metal.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard it. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple may use liquid metal for the future iPhone Fold hinge (if that’s the marketing name). The main benefit of using liquid metal is its rigidity. “Amorphous alloy” or “metallic glass” is 2.5x stronger than titanium, making it the perfect hinge material.
Amorphous particles are resistant to bending, deformation, and pressure, extending the lifespan of the hinge and the device. The hinge design may also reduce or eliminate display creases.
Thanks to its strong support, the display panel will resist finger pressing, bending, etc. Apple is reportedly working with hardware suppliers to eliminate the crease in flexible OLED technology.
