Unlike Android phones, iPhones do not have an 8K video recording capability. Apple never actually implemented high-resolution video recording on the iPhone 16 series. An Apple leaker with a solid track record says the iPhone 17 will finally support 8K capture.

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus can record 4K videos at 60 fps, while the Pro and Pro Max can record 120 fps. Apple was ready to offer 8K video recording with the iPhone 16 lineup, but the Pro and Pro Max telephoto sensor was the bottleneck.

The iPhone’s camera sensor is 12MP; a 35MP sensor would be necessary to record 8K resolution. Apple says it would be confusing if you couldn’t record 8K videos with the telephoto unit, and therefore couldn’t switch between all cameras.

On the other hand, Android OEMs typically provide their camera sensors with the highest recording resolution.

Apple is planning to upgrade the telephoto sensor in the iPhone 17 series if it supports 8K video recording.
