There’s buzz that Samsung might be aiming for the slimmest foldable phone yet with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold7. According to rumours, this move towards ultra-thin design might come at a cost.
Insider @kro_roe suggests that Samsung may downgrade the S Pen experience for the Galaxy Z Fold7 to achieve this sleekness. The details of this downgrade are still unclear. The Galaxy Z Fold series already lacks a dedicated S Pen holster, so it’s uncertain what adjustments can be made.
To put this in context, the Galaxy Z Fold6 currently has a 5.6mm profile when unfolded. At the same time, the Special Edition version, sold only in Korea and China, measures 4.9mm when unfolded. The Special Edition model is Samsung’s slimmest foldable phone yet, but it doesn’t support the S Pen. The Galaxy Z Fold7 could be even thinner than the Special Edition.
It’s worth noting that Samsung also made the Galaxy S25 Ultra slimmer, but it’s unclear if this was due to the S Pen Bluetooth downgrade. A recent teardown indicated that removing the S Pen’s Air Actions feature might not have significantly affected the phone’s slimmer profile. This year, Samsung appears to be focusing on reducing the thickness of its devices, with the upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge expected to be very thin.
Meanwhile, competitors like Oppo are producing super-slim foldable phones. The Oppo Find N5, for example, is rumoured to measure around 4mm or less. Samsung might feel the need to keep up with these trends and has decided to re-enter the race for slimness, for better or for worse.
