Apple’s first-ever self-developed 5G modem replaces Qualcomm’s modems in other iPhones. According to today’s report, Apple will continue to develop essential connectivity chips in-house, and the iPhone 17 family will feature Apple’s first self-developed Wi-Fi chip this fall.
It would replace Apple’s current Broadcom chips. Ming-Chi Kuo, who was always knowledgeable about Apple’s Asian supply chain, provided the information. The iPhone 17 Air will use the Apple Wi-Fi chip and the Apple C1 modem, which debuted in the iPhone 16e.
Meanwhile, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will use Qualcomm modems with Apple’s Wi-Fi chip. Apple is attempting to reduce costs by creating these chips in-house since it will save the company a lot of money it’s currently paying Qualcomm and Broadcom. According to Kuo, the switch to the in-house Wi-Fi chip will also “enhance connectivity across Apple devices”, whatever that means.
