For years, there have been whispers about Apple working on a foldable iPhone, especially in light of the growing popularity of foldable smartphones from competitors like Samsung. As leaks continue to surface, the specifications of Apple’s rumoured foldable device are starting to take shape. Here’s what we can expect.
Design:
According to a post on X by HaYao, the foldable iPhone is said to feature a book-style foldable display, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series and Vivo’s X Fold. This means the device will open up like a book, transforming from a regular smartphone into a larger tablet-like screen.
However, Apple may take this concept a step further. A separate post from X user Jukanlosreve claims that when fully unfolded. The device could sport a huge 12-inch display—putting it close to the size of the largest iPad Pro model.
Despite its massive screen, Apple is reportedly focusing on keeping the foldable iPhone thinner than its competitors. When folded, the device is expected to be just 9.2mm thick, which is thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Once unfolded, the iPhone is said to reach a slim 4.6mm thickness. A notable improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 5.6mm. While this foldable iPhone may not be the thinnest foldable on the market. The title may go to the Oppo Find N5 at 4.35mm—it will still be a remarkably thin device for its size.
Of course, with such a large screen, weight will likely be a factor. Although no exact weight has been revealed, the 12-inch display suggests the device won’t be light. Users will likely need to balance the convenience of having an iPhone and iPad combined into one device with its added heft.
Specs:
Other rumoured features of the foldable iPhone include a dual-battery setup with a total capacity of up to 5,000mAh. This is larger than the battery found in the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which comes with a 4,400mAh battery. However, with such a large screen, battery life could still be a challenge. So it will be interesting to see how Apple manages this balance.
In terms of hardware, Apple is expected to use a special glass developed by Samsung for the foldable display, though it’s noteworthy that Apple will design the hinge mechanism themselves. While it’s hard to avoid the infamous crease that comes with foldable screens, Apple will likely aim to minimize this issue with their custom design.
With all these features, Apple’s foldable iPhone could represent a significant leap in smartphone innovation, but we’ll have to wait for its official unveiling to see how it holds up against existing foldable devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series.
