Last week, reports emerged that Samsung is developing a tri-fold smartphone to compete with Huawei’s Mate XT. Initially, the device was rumoured to launch in the second half of this year, with production capped at fewer than 300,000 units due to the complex manufacturing processes involved.
However, a new report from Korea suggests the production numbers will be even lower, with only about 200,000 units planned. Component production for the device is expected to begin in the second quarter of the year, between April and June.
Samsung has reportedly shared its plans for the tri-fold phone with major component manufacturers. The device currently features a screen size of just under 10 inches when fully unfolded, though the design has yet to be finalized, according to the report.
The report also highlights that sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold SE have fallen short of 100,000 units. Meanwhile, Samsung is said to be working on a Galaxy Z Flip FE for release this year. The company aims to sell around 7 million foldable devices in total, including 3 million Flip7 units, 2 million Fold7 units, 900,000 Flip FE units, and 200,000 units of the tri-fold smartphone.
