Despite the initial AirTag being released more than three years ago, Apple has not introduced its follow-up model. Earlier rumours hinted at a possible 2024 release, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman debunked this in January, stating it wouldn’t happen that year. Gurman has shared that the AirTag 2 is slated for a 2025 debut, featuring three significant enhancements.
In this week’s edition of the Power On newsletter, it’s revealed that the AirTag 2, known internally as B589, is now in the manufacturing testing phase and Apple is gearing up for its market introduction. Although the design will echo that of the first AirTag, there are three key modifications planned.
The AirTag 2 will incorporate an advanced wireless chip, probably the second-gen Ultra-Wideband (U2) chip, enhancing its connectivity and extending its operational range for more effective tracking.
Furthermore, privacy enhancements are on the agenda for the new version, with modifications to the device’s speaker system to deter its misuse in tracking individuals without consent.
Gurman also mentioned that alongside the AirTag 2, Apple is preparing to unveil a smart home display in 2025. This year will also see updated models in the iPad Air, basic iPad, MacBook Air, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, and iPhone SE lines.
