Pei offered a glimpse into the company’s future software ambitions: an AI-enhanced Nothing OS. The smartphone remains the most vital tool for connecting with others and accessing information, but Pei also addressed the current duopoly of Apple and Google.

According to Pei, Nothing’s goal is to create an operating system tailored for enhanced user experiences to break new ground.

Compared to Apple and Google, Nothing remains a relatively small player in the smartphone industry. It may not be the best strategy to devote all resources to developing an independent operating system.

Rather, he plans to boost the functionality of Nothing OS by integrating advanced artificial intelligence (using models developed by larger tech companies). Pei did not reveal details regarding Nothing OS, but his comments suggest significant enhancements, potentially reshaping how users interact with their phones.

In Pei’s view, AI has simplified OS development, enabling unprecedented levels of personalization. His emphasis on user experience rather than the core technical foundations ruled out building from scratch. However, his emphasis on leveraging the information collected by smartphones can make them smarter.

Although Pei declined to say whether the project will receive additional funding, he said Nothing could move forward independently if necessary. While AI would play an important role, it would not be the focus of the project. We shouldn’t call it the AI operating system, he said, adding that success would depend on “who can create the best market fit” and deliver an engaging user experience.
