Bloomberg has recently reported that Apple is gearing up to launch a new version of the iPad Air in spring 2025, boasting internal enhancements. This update comes just a year after the iPad Air was updated with the M2 chip, which is much sooner than the usual 18 to 24 months for such refreshes. This quick succession has sparked curiosity about what Apple might be planning to improve in these models.
Apple has plans to introduce a redesigned Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air, distinct from the one that has been in use since its debut alongside the iPad Pro in 2020. While the base model iPad has seen the introduction of the Magic Keyboard Folio, and the iPad Pro now boasts an aluminium Magic Keyboard, the iPad Air’s upcoming keyboard will feature some unique aspects.
According to Mark Gurman, this new accessory for the iPad Air will include a function row for enhanced usability, but it will differ from the iPad Pro’s model by not incorporating an aluminium top case.
Gurman’s first report didn’t mention specifics about the chip. It seems highly improbable that Apple would refresh the iPad Air without changing the processor. This suggests we might see either the M3 or the M4 chip in the update.
Mark Gurman suggested that the next iPad Air might feature Face ID. However, he pointed out that Apple aims to keep the iPad Air distinct from the iPad Pro, hinting that such an upgrade might not occur. Despite the allure of Face ID, which has been a hallmark of the iPad Pro for over six years, it appears we won’t see this feature in the upcoming iPad Air.
