As of 2025, Apple plans to switch to OLED displays across the entire iPhone lineup. Apple will no longer use LCD panels on its iPhones starting next year, Japanese publication Nikkei reported. On its premium iPhone models, Apple already uses OLED panels.
In 2022, the iPhone SE 3rd gen was the last model to feature an LCD screen. Starting next year, the iPhone SE will use OLED like the rest of the lineup. Currently, rumours suggest that the iPhone SE 4 will have an OLED display. Apple will finally be able to use OLED display technology on all iPhones.
Due to their focus on LCD panels, Japan’s JDI and Sharp will be excluded from the iPhone display supply chain. Both companies provided iPhones with around 200 million LCD panels in 2015. Since the emergence of the iPhone X with an OLED display in 2017, LCD shipments have dropped significantly.
JDI and Sharp’s iPhone LCD panel shipments dropped dramatically to around 20 million in 2023. It is still expected that they will provide LCDs for the iPhone SE 3. Previously, both companies relied heavily on Apple for revenue. While Sharp is scaling back its LCD business, JDI is now focusing more on automotive LCDs.
According to Nikkei, Apple has also selected LG Display and BOE for its OLED panels. Apple is reportedly ordering screens for the iPhone SE 4 from these suppliers. Around half of the iPhone OLED display market is held by Samsung. The share of LG Display and BOE is about 30 percent and 20 percent, respectively.
