When unfolded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 is 5.6mm thick, and when folded, it is 12.1mm thick, making it appear thin compared with some Chinese rivals. Samsung’s next foldable could, however, be significantly slimmer. KED Global reports that TM Roh, the President and Head of Samsung’s MX team, wants the next Galaxy foldable smartphones to be slimmer.
According to industry sources, Roh asked Samsung’s engineers to develop a foldable as thin as the Galaxy S24 when folded. S24 is 7.6mm thick, S24+ is 7.7mm thick, and S24 Ultra is 8.6mm thick.
When folded, Samsung’s next foldable would be 3.5mm slimmer than the Fold6, which is 1.3mm thinner than last year’s Fold5. According to the source, the MX team is also working on bringing the next foldable’s weight under 239g.
Additionally, Samsung will unveil a 10mm Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim by the end of 2024, with subsequent models being thinner. With an 8″ folding screen, it would be larger than the Fold6’s 7.6″ folding display.
Besides developing a slimmer folding smartphone, Samsung is reportedly also creating foldable-specific content and collaborating with Google and other Android developers.
