We’ve covered several reports suggesting Google Pixel phones may soon support satellite communication. Android 15 Beta 4 confirms that Google is working on satellite emergency call support for Android smartphones.

Several code strings reference upcoming satellite connectivity features in Android 14’s fourth beta. It is likely to be called “Pixel Satellite SOS.”

It is expected that the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be the first to benefit from this feature, although it has not been confirmed. For satellite communication, these smartphones will be equipped with Samsung’s new Exynos 5400 modem, which has NTN capabilities.

Satellite communication will be limited to text messages sent through Google Messages, according to the code strings. Similarly to Apple, Google might provide a two-year grace period for Pixel Satellite SOS.

Despite this, Google has not yet indicated what its pricing structure will be after this initial period. Google’s emergency satellite service may extend beyond messaging, while Apple offers emergency calls via satellite as well.

The code also indicates that the feature might not be available for Pixel 9 phones at launch or could be limited to certain regions initially. Software updates may be required to enable Pixel Satellite SOS on eligible Pixel smartphones.

Samsung is also planning to introduce satellite connectivity to its Galaxy phones soon. Three Samsung apps support this feature, suggesting the company is nearing completion.

Neither Google nor Samsung have provided a timeline for when their devices will support satellite communication.
