According to rumours, Apple will equip both iPhone 16 Pro models with periscope lenses, bringing 5x optical zoom to the standard model for the first time.
This incredible zoom capability was previously available only on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, leaving some users with a tough choice- prioritising a smaller phone or superior telephoto performance. DigiTimes reports that Apple is listening to user feedback and making the Pro camera experience more consistent across the lineup as a result of this leak.
According to the report, Apple has already begun manufacturing the periscope lens modules in partnership with Largan Precision and Yujingguang.
Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro features a unique “quadruple-reflection prism” design for its telephoto lens. It allows for a narrower camera bump than its competitors, but it also comes with a price. The additional light bounces in the lens may result in light loss, affecting low-light telephoto performance. Apple hasn’t yet revealed whether the iPhone 16 series has improved this aspect.
In addition to the 5x zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro, whispers hint at an even improved telephoto camera on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. A “super telephoto” lens may be exclusive to the Pro Max, offering even greater zoom.
There is speculation that the iPhone 16 series could receive a design overhaul in addition to an upgrade to the camera. In addition, the iPhone 16 and Plus models may inherit the “Action button” previously exclusive to Pro models. Touch-sensitive alternatives that provide haptic feedback might replace physical buttons.
