When the foldable phone revolution was in its infancy, Apple (mostly) skipped it, leaving fans wondering when, or even if, a foldable iPhone would ever be available. It might finally happen in 2026, according to a new report.
As opposed to most Android manufacturers, Apple’s first foldable phone is said to be a flip phone, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series. Earlier reports suggested Apple had been testing a clamshell design internally. Apple’s typical two-year development cycle for new iPhones suggests a launch date of 2026.
The foldable display, however, might come from an old foe – Samsung Display. With Samsung already supplying OLED panels for current iPhones, this wouldn’t be the first time Apple relies on a competitor for such technology.
According to the report, the first foldable iPhone will have dimensions “similar to existing iPhones.” This refers to length and width, not necessarily thickness. A foldable iPhone offers a larger display while remaining pocketable when closed.
Apple’s foldable ambitions have been the subject of rumours for years. Despite the specific timeline and design direction offered in this report, it’s wise to remain cautious. Before integrating technologies into its products, Apple is known for taking its time perfecting them.
As a market, foldables are still in the early stages of development. Concerns about durability, app optimization, and user experience remain priorities.
