The iPhone 16 series is expected to be launched by Apple in September. As reported by TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 16 Pro may get the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s tetraprism 5x telephoto module.

Despite being limited to the top model, Apple added a periscope telephoto camera to the iPhone 15 series last year. The iPhone 15 Pro features the same 3x telephoto module as its predecessor. With its 1/3.06 inch sensor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x periscope telephoto module is slightly bigger than the 3x telephoto module with its 1/1.35 inch sensor and 3D sensor-shift OIS capability. In spite of this, the 5x periscope telephoto has the same 12MP resolution as the previous 3x telephoto.

In order to manufacture the lenses for the periscope telephoto module, Apple has already partnered with two companies: Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO).

According to the latest report, both iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max may get tetraprism telephoto cameras.

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumoured to have an upgraded telephoto module with a higher resolution. According to reports, the phone could have a 48MP sensor (1/2.6′′ versus 1/3.06′′) for its tetraprism telephoto, allowing for a greater zoom range.

In a report, Apple’s telephoto modules feature tetra prisms, which allow a larger aperture, thus allowing more light to reach the sensor. The Pro model could benefit from the addition of a tetraprism camera for better-zoomed shots in low light.

Apple’s iPhone 19 series will feature additional prisms in the tetraprism module as the next upgrade in tetraprism technology. As a result, the focal length will be increased and the zoom range will be extended.
