Fusion is a concept unveiled by Nokia-branded smartphone maker HMD Global at MWC2024.
Despite the lack of details, Fusion appears to be a return to modular phones, with an attachable “smart outfit” that expands the phone’s capabilities.
It’s not an entirely new idea. Back in 2016, Motorola’s Moto Mods offered an approach similar to Jolla’s phone in 2014. HMD hopes for a different outcome despite these failed attempts. The company has released a development toolkit and renderings showcasing potential accessories, but concrete details are still lacking.
In Australia, Benelux, and France, HMD is now hyping up the release on social media. There is a graphic of a smartphone with add-ons on it that the company shared. According to the “Coming Soon” tagline on the bottom left, Fusion phones may be available in these regions soon.
Despite being not new, HMD Fusion is an interesting concept that will make a big difference if it can address past modular phone failures. The Fusion smartphone could revolutionize customizing phones with its well-designed base, robust developer community, and practical smart outfits.
It risks becoming another forgotten footnote in the history of smartphones without careful planning and execution.
