The Xiaomi 15 series of smartphones are reportedly in development for the Chinese market. As the first smartphones to feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets, Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro launched in October 2023. The Xiaomi 15 lineup will likely debut around the same time this year. New leaks have revealed key details about the 15 series fingerprint scanner, thanks to tipster Digital Chat Station.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 mobile platform may power the Xiaomi 15 series. It appears that Xiaomi 15, 15 Pro, and 15 Ultra are currently testing Goodix single-point ultrasonic fingerprint recognition technology, according to a new leak from DCS. In this way, Xiaomi will depart from the optical fingerprint technology it uses in its 14-series phones.
By pressing the finger against the screen, ultrasonic waves are emitted from underneath. The waves interact with the fingerprint’s unique ridges and valleys. As a result of analyzing when these echoes return and their intensity, the scanner generates an accurate and secure 3D image of the fingerprint.
In addition to providing better penetration, water resistance, and resistance to smudges, ultrasonic fingerprint technology increases accuracy, enables the detection of live fingers, and provides enhanced security over optical fingerprint identification.
According to DCS, it is still too early to confirm the Xiaomi 15 series will include an ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanner. More details may emerge during the hardware New Product Introduction (NPI) phase for the 15 series in April.
Xiaomi 14’s display measures 6.36 inches, which is smaller than other flagship phones. Xiaomi 15 is likely to remain a compact flagship phone. According to DCS’ leak, competing brands may launch similar-sized smartphones in China as well.
