TRAI has updated its Mobile Number Portability (MNP) rules. New regulations prohibit users from porting their number to a different telecom operator if they have replaced their physical card within the last seven days.
A new set of rules has been implemented to reduce and prevent SIM swap fraud across the country.
For seven days, users will not be allowed to port that number to a new telecom operator if they opt for a new physical SIM from their operator because their SIM is damaged, misplaced, or stolen. If the user wants to switch providers after the cooling off period has expired, he or she can do so.
The TRAI says these rules will prevent fraudulent SIM replacements in India. MNP malpractices have been detected in the country, increasing fraud risk.
TRAI did not specify the exact method scammers use to take advantage of this system, but it is a common complaint that most SIM card cloning frauds occur during MNP and SIM replacement procedures.
During the seven-day cooldown period, users will have ample time to activate their SIM card in their primary phone before scammers abuse MNP.
It is possible to port your number to any other carrier without waiting if you have not yet replaced your physical SIM card. There is a limit of one porting per user every 90 days. You must wait 90 days after switching operators before switching service providers.
