According to reports, iPhone 16 series models will feature the latest A18 chipset. Jeff Pu of Haitong Securities first reported the news in November. It is reported that Apple will launch the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus with regular A18 chipsets and the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max with A18 Pro chipsets. Despite this, a new leak suggests that all four iPhone 16 models will use the same chip – A18 Bionic. According to a MacRumors report, iOS 18 source code contains details about the iPhone 16 series.
Common chip for all four models of iPhone 16:
A source code for iOS 18 codenamed Crystal has been obtained by MacRumors. Four unreleased iPhone identifiers are said to be contained in the code. These are D47, D48, D93, and D94 referring to iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max, respectively. According to the report, the Crystal code does not mention an iPhone 16 Ultra, contrary to previous rumors. In addition, it suggests the iPhone 16 Ultra could come with a separate identifier, such as D94 or D94a, to differentiate it from other iPhones.
MacRumors suggests that Apple has used separate identifiers before. Apple has developed a new version of the iPhone 15 Pro Max (D84) with identifier code D84S, according to the report. S stands for Sinope, Apple’s in-house 5G modem project codename. Despite not being released, the iPhone 15 Pro Max with Apple’s proprietary 5G modem confirms the separate identifier theory for the iPhone 16 Ultra.
Apple will now use the same general chipset called A18 across all models to maintain uniform performance. According to the source code, all iPhone 16 models will be powered by the same t8140 system. Apple has not yet indicated whether the A18 Pro and A18 SoC will differentiate between Pro and non-Pro models. Also included in the source code is a reference to a Broadcom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module. The source code does not reveal any other information.
