Since iPhone 5, iPhones have had Lightning ports. The upcoming iPhone 15 series may finally bid farewell to Apple’s proprietary port as reports and leaks suggest the company may switch to USB Type-C instead. Along with 2023’s iPhones, a couple of older iPhones may also get upgraded to USB-C ports in place of Lightning ports.
Additionally, Apple may add USB-C charging ports to several older iPhone models. Apple developer and writer Aaron on X revealed this. Aaron discovered two iPhone models that were not present in the earlier beta builds of tvOS 17 beta 5. Moreover, these two models differ from the four iPhone 15 references found in older versions of tvOS.
New iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models with USB-C charging ports have been found in the software, iPhone14,1, and iPhone14,9.
There’s no guarantee that Apple will redesign older iPhones with Type-C ports instead of Lightning ports at this time. Apple’s decision to provide USB-C ports on all devices sold in the European Union could make sense if the report is true. The Type-C port was mandated in 2020 by law.
Apple’s decision to switch to USB-C ports beginning with the iPhone 15 series is the result of strict EU regulations and orders, if reports are to be believed.
