Google won’t launch the Pixel 8 series anytime soon, but details are leaking fast. The Pixel 8 Pro will feature a temperature sensor, an intelligent processor, and a refined design over its predecessor. A new report claims the device will also get a 64MP telephoto sensor along with a new ISOCELL GN2 main sensor. A new main sensor is also included in the vanilla model, but not an ultrawide lens.
Kamila Wojciechowska writes for Android Authority that the Pixel 8 series is receiving a significant camera upgrade. Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will use the 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN2 as their primary camera sensor. Over the GN1, this is a notable improvement.
The new main sensor captures approximately 35% more light than its predecessor. Enhanced low-light images and faster shutter speeds reduce motion blur. It also captures 8K/30fps video.
Also, the Pixel 8 Pro is said to get a “more usable” ultrawide sensor. A new 64MP Sony IMX787 sensor is expected to replace the old and forgotten 12MP Sony IMX386 on the Pixel 7 Pro. It should improve ultrawide shooting capabilities on the device. The standard Pixel 8 still features the same Sony IMX386 but with a better zoom ratio of 0.55x (Pixel 7 has a 0.67x zoom ratio).
The lens has been made wider by Google. There’s been a bump from 0.56x zoom ratio to 0.49x field-of-view (FoV). There’s a chance the Pixel 8 Pro won’t have macro mode – as of now, the feature is disabled. Maybe Google will re-enable it later.
In the Pixel 8 Pro, the telephoto camera has the same 5x module as the Pixel 7 Pro.
