With WhatsApp’s introduction of seamless cross-device account syncing in 2021, WhatsApp is now bringing the logical conclusion to that effort. A feature that has been requested the most is now available on the service.

One WhatsApp account can be used on up to five phones. Each additional phone can be linked to WhatsApp in the same way as web browsers, tablets, and desktop computers. Messages, media, and calls are encrypted end-to-end on each linked phone.

In addition, if your primary phone is inactive “for a long period” (the company does not specify) you will be automatically logged out of all companion devices.

Now you can switch between multiple phones without signing out of WhatsApp. The same WhatsApp account can be used on multiple phones. It’s great to see progress!

Globally, this update has already begun rolling out. During the next few weeks, the rollout will be completed.

The company will also introduce a “more accessible way” to link to companion devices in the coming weeks. Rather than scanning a QR code on your phone to enable device linking, you can enter your phone number on WhatsApp Web to receive a one-time code. Right now, WhatsApp Web is the only platform with this feature, but “more companion devices” are promised in the future.
