Samsung wasn’t the first company to introduce foldable smartphones, but it certainly made them popular. As one of the first major players to jump on the foldable phone trend, Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold in 2019. Samsung could release a tri-fold smartphone later this year, which is reportedly taking this unconventional smartphone category to a whole new level.
Popular tipster Yogesh Brar tweeted recently that Samsung might launch a tri-fold smartphone alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. It’s worth taking this information with a grain of salt since Samsung has previously denied rumors about a tri-fold phone.
In 2020, Samsung is rumored to develop a tri-fold smartphone. Around that time, the company demonstrated the technology and filed a patent. At this year’s MWC, the brand’s display arm also presented a concept of a triple-folding smartphone along with other unconventional designs.
According to the patent, the device will have two hinges instead of one. When partially folded, the phone will take on a Z shape due to one hinge enabling an inward fold and the other hinge enabling an outward fold. The outward-folding hinge allows part of the screen to be used as a smartphone display, eliminating the need for a separate screen for the phone.
