Lenovo and Motorola are holding their Tech World 2022 conferences, which may reveal future devices. Luca Rossi (Lenovo Group EVP) demonstrated a rollable concept phone via a physical button on the side that expands vertically from a 5-inch slate to a 6.5-inch tall screen.
Additionally, when watching videos, the rollable smartphone’s content will dynamically expand to fill the screen and Lenovo will continue to research other applications.
At this point, the rollable phone is just a proof of concept, but flexible OLED screens are built into Lenovo’s and Motorola’s current device lineups, including the ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022 laptop and the reborn Motorola Razr. In the future, both companies will work on new OLED devices with flexible screens and explore new use cases.
The company is also developing a rollable laptop that offers a vertically expanding screen to enhance multitasking, browsing, and use of screen real estate.
As of now, Lenovo has not revealed any further details about its rollable phones and laptops. It would be interesting to see what these devices are called when they make it to the market. We won’t see these rollable phones until at least a few years from now, so Moto Rolla might be a neat name for the device.
