Apple has updated its iPad Pro 12.9″ and iPad Pro 11″ models with the new Apple M2 processor. In addition to the hover feature on the Apple Pencil, the new models come with improved connectivity and an updated camera.

It is the switch to the new M2 SoC that is the biggest change here. It features an 8-core CPU (4 performance cores + 4 efficiency cores), a 10-core GPU, as well as a 16-core Neural Engine to perform AI and machine learning tasks. The company claims a memory bandwidth of 100MB/s.

The iPad Pro M2 is claimed to be 35% faster in graphics, 40% faster in machine learning, and has 50% greater memory bandwidth than the iPad Pro M1.

The new iPad Pro models also support hover with the 2nd generation Apple Pencil thanks to an updated touchscreen and iPadOS 16. Apps can now detect the Pencil up to 12mm above the display, enabling additional features. In both first-party and third-party applications, this functionality will be available.

New iPad Pro models include Wi-Fi 6E, which provides downloads up to 2.4Gbps, 2x faster than previous models. The LTE models also feature Bluetooth 5.3 support and 5G connectivity.

Additionally, even though the camera hardware hasn’t changed, new M2 software enhances the iPad Pro’s camera features. iPad Pro models now support Apple’s high-quality ProRes codec for recording videos and transcoding them up to 3x faster with the new ProRes encoder. Furthermore, Smart HDR 4 replaces Smart HDR 3 for still cameras.
