Oppo INNO Day is here and the company has surprised many with its new technologies. On day 1 Oppo announced its first-ever AR glass with Oppo Air Glass. Not just that we also got the company’s first custom NPU chip with MariSilicon X NPU too. So let’s start with the new camera imaging NPU chipset MariSilicon X NPU.
Oppo MariSilicon X NPU:
MariSilicon X NPU is Oppo’s first custom chip based on the 6nm process. The main aim of this new NPU engine is that to produce the best quality images & videos on smartphones. The first smartphone to feature this new MariSilicon X NPU will be the upcoming Oppo Find X4 series which is scheduled for Q1 2022 launch.
So with the new MariSilicon X NPU, the company will no longer use Qualcomm’s ISP after all. It comes with a new 20-bit, 120db dynamic range, real-time RAW processing in 4K video support. The new NPU engine relies on AI for noise reduction, better color reproduction, HDR, improved detail, dynamic range, etc.
The new ISP also supports the separation of the white channel from the RGB for Oppo’s RGBW sensor. Further, the new NPU engine can work whopping 18 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This NPU also gets dedicated memory support with 8.5 GB/s data transfer support.
Oppo Air Glass:
Further, at the event, Oppo surprised everyone with the launch of the first-ever smart glass with Oppo Air Glass. In the past, we saw Google working on its custom Glass which never saw the light of the day and got scrapped. Now Oppo has announced its first AR Glass with Oppo Air Glass.
The Oppo Air Glass is a device that overlays various types of information directly in front of your eyes with a micro projector via assisted reality (AR). It attaches to specially designed frames. It will be available in two colors with White and Black.
The Oppo Air Glass comes with a frame that carries Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC and the lens on the other. The monocular waveguide and a self-developed micro-LED projector that uses five-element glass lenses to project information are part of the system. The device comes with the most compact projector in the industry of a size of 0.5cc.
With the help of micro-LED tech, the device gets the highest brightness level despite of small size. With Oppo’s Air Glass, you can view the display in two modes – 16-level grayscale and 256-level grayscale, which deliver up to 1400 nits of brightness so that information remains visible under all lighting conditions.
The Air Glass can be controlled with touch, voice, hand motion, or head movement (when paired with an Oppo Watch 2). You can open and close notifications by nodding or shaking your head, for example.
You can display applications like Weather, Calendar, Health, Navigation, or Teleprompter on Oppo Air Glass, making it possible to do a presentation practically anywhere.
Air Glass comes with a translation function, which enables cross-cultural communication between two people wearing it. The two-way translation between Mandarin Chinese and English will be available out of the box.
