The Oppo A55 5G was launched in January but never made it to India. Instead, the nation will receive a 4G-only A55, but the names are confusing. The 4G model features a better camera and charges quicker.

The Oppo A55 runs on the Helio G35, a 12nm processor with eight Cortex-A53 cores and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB or 6/128GB storage. The triple card slot allows you to increase storage even with two SIM cards.

So the phone sacrifices performance but gets a 50 MP primary camera sensor (vs. 13 MP for the 5G model). A brighter f/1.8 aperture (vs f/2.2) and pixel binning give it an edge over the 5G equivalent in low light. Despite its more powerful processor, the A55 5G can only record 1080p at 30 fps.

The front-facing camera was also improved to 16 MP (up from 8 MP). Record in 1080p/30 fps with this one! Also, instead of a notch, this camera is within a punch hole.

Then the screen. This is a 6.51” LCD with 720 x 1600 px resolution (20:9). It boasts a 1500:1 contrast ratio and supports 70% of the NTSC color gamut. The screen refreshes at 60Hz and samples touch at 120Hz. It is protected by NEG T2X-1 tempered glass.

The Oppo A55, like its 5G brother, has a 5,000 mAh battery. But it enables 18W rapid charging (9V/2A), so it fills up faster – 17% in 15 minutes, 33% in 30 minutes. Optimized Night Charging keeps the battery at 80% overnight and finishes charging in the morning.

Night-time Standby mode loses just 1.37 percent charge over 8 hours, so you’ll wake up with the same battery power. Oppo claims that the A55 can talk on WhatsApp for almost an hour or make a phone call for about an hour and a half on a 5% charge.

A couple of additional points. An onboard fingerprint reader is also available, as is face unlock. There includes a 3.5mm headphone connector and a USB-C 2.0 port. Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX and LDAC is also an option. NFC is not supported. Finally, the phone comes with ColorOS 11.1 (based on Android 11).

Indians can now pre-order the Oppo A55. The 4/64GB version will be available on October 3 for INR 15,500 ($210/€180). The 6/128GB version will be available on October 11 and will cost INR 17,500 ($235/€205).

Pre-orders are open now at Oppo’s own shop, Amazon India, and select merchants. There are also discount and cashback options.
