The Red Magic 6S Pro has arrived with a new chipset, improved cooling and faster touch controls. There’s no vanilla 6S model, but the original 6 and the 6R are still around.
With the Snapdragon 888+, the prime CPU core on the 6S Pro phone runs at 2.995 GHz, up from 2.84 GHz on the Red Magic 6Pro’s original chipset.
Even with a faster clock speed, a phone’s chipset won’t be kept cool. As a result, Red Magic created the ICE 7.0 cooling system. Phase Change Materials (PCM) were added to version 6.0, which was used on the 6 Pro. As heat is generated, they store it slowly and then release it. They work like a heat battery. Thus, bursts of computational activity should not cause heat spikes.
Active thermal management is provided by a 20,000 rpm cooling fan, like the one in the 6 Pro. The higher speed of this fan results in a 30% increase in air volume and a 35% increase in air pressure compared to the previous 18,000 rpm fans. The lower RPMs are tempered by a metal cover, which reduces noise by 40%.
A special edition of the Red Magic 6 Pro was released for the original 6 series. Standard models of the 6S Pro are available with transparent backs (although it is dependent on the memory option). You will also get four RGB LEDs on the cooling fan if you choose the transparent one. “Ghost” is the name of this transparent colorway. If you choose black, the LEDs are not visible from the outside (since they aren’t colored).
Red Magic 6S Pro has a 6.8″ AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,400 pixels. The panel features a DCI-P3 pixel format with a 100% coverage rate. Dimmable DC dimming provides a flicker-free operation at a peak brightness of 700 nits. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass.
This panel features a refresh rate of 165 Hz along with 120, 90, and 60 Hz options. There’s a big difference in 6S Pro’s multi-finger touch sampling rate: it’s 720 Hz for multiple fingers. The 6 Pro was 500 Hz for multiple fingers and 360 Hz for one finger. The 6S Pro is 720 Hz.
Red Magic’s gaming software lets users customize the functions of the shoulder triggers. The S-model retains its two shoulder triggers that run at 450 Hz touch sampling rate (up from 400 Hz). They have a response time of 2.2 ms.
Regardless, another interesting upgrade is that the under-display fingerprint reader can now detect heart rate. No, not for the health app, but as a safety feature. And it’s super-fast with a 100-millisecond response time.
The Snapdragon 888+ also handles 5G connectivity – with up to 7.5 Gbps downlink and 3.0 Gbps uplink for streaming on the go – and Wi-Fi 6E, which adds another 3.5 Gbps to the less crowded 6 GHz band.
On the international model, the Red Magic 6S Pro houses a 5,050 mAh battery with 66W compatibility. It ships with only a 30W charger, though; a 66W charger is available separately.
China-bound units have a 4,500mAh battery supported by 120W charging. However, global models will have a 5,050mAh battery with up to 66W fast charging. The Charge Separation mode enables you to plug in power without charging the battery (reducing heat generation).
The 6 Pro has a 64 MP main camera on the back, as well as a 8 MP ultra-wide camera and a depth sensor, and an 8 MP front-facing camera. The phone runs RedMagic OS 4.0, which is based on Android 11.
It’s equipped with a USB-C port that supports 3.1 speeds and DisplayPort for connecting an external monitor. It also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack for latency-free audio, and it also supports Bluetooth 5.1.
Red Magic 6S Pro will be available starting September 27. You can choose between 12/128 GB, 16/256 GB in Cyborg Black or 16/256 GB in Ghost (Transparent). The trio is priced at $599/€599/£519, $699/€699/£609, and $729/€729/£629, respectively.
