.An analyst recently reported that Apple will integrate satellite communication into its next iPhone. Within a few hours, Bloomberg reported that satellite communication may have a limited function.
In the past, it was believed that satellite connections would enable carriers to offer internet connections out of the area that is covered by the carrier, but the source says this is strictly for emergency use.
Reports indicate that Apple intends to make this communication available to users who find themselves without cellular service. So that they can send emergency messages via satellite. The report indicates that Apple plans to include such a feature on future iPhones, as a person with knowledge of the situation stated.
The feature is called “Emergency Message via Satellite” and would be integrated into the iMessage app as a third protocol (alongside SMS and iMessage). The gray bubbles would replace green or blue bubbles. In addition, a satellite network will allow the reporting of major emergencies, like plane crashes or sinking ships.”
Although there is a possibility that the iPhone will come with a satellite link feature. It’s expected to be available next year. It is unknown if these features will be public or if they will even be changed or scrapped altogether. As with any report like this, you should keep a generous amount of skepticism in mind.
Here is Bloomberg’s full report on how a future iPhone might incorporate satellite communication.
