Intel announces its very first 5G modem for smartphones with Intel XMM 8160 which will be a direct competitor to Snapdragon X50 Modem which is expected to arrive with SD8150 SoC. The new Intel XMM 8160 comes with latest mmWave tech along with support for older standards aka 2G. The single modem will now power all kind of devices like smartphones, tablets, PC, and hotspots.

The new Intel XMM 8160 comes with latest 5G NR support which ranges from 600MHz to 6GHz along with mmWave tech. The new Intel XMM 8160 also comes with download speeds up to 6GBps. The new Intel XMM 8160 also comes with EN-DC support which will allow connecting 4G and 5G networks side by side.

The new Intel XMM 8160 will also ship with Non-Stand Alone connection and will be active during the 4G/5G  transition and also comes with the Stand-Alone connection as well. As per Intel the new Intel XMM 8160 will be available to OEM’s starting from second half of 2019 and we can see devices launching with the new modems by early 2020.
