Intel announces the new modems that are compatible with 5G radios and 4G LTE networks. The new 5G modem which was unveiled yesterday was the Intel XMM 8000 series.
The new 5G modem is compatible with both networks running on high frequency and sub-6 GHz frequency range. Carriers can now use high range frequencies to provide high data transfer speed and lower frequencies for better building penetration and larger coverage.Intel also unveiled their first commercial 5G modem with Intel XMM 8060 which supports 5G networks with both standalone and non-standalone and also support 4G, 3G, and 2G networks. The new Intel 5G modems will be shipped in mid-2019 as 5G networks will be rolled out not earlier than 2020.
Intel also launched new 4G LTE modem with Intel XMM7660 which can deliver download speeds up to 1.6 Gbps as it comes with Cat 19 LTE capabilities. When compared with other modems Huawei latest implementation gives speed up to 1.2 Gbps whereas SD835 chip has max download speeds up to 1 Gbps. The Intel XMM7660 also comes with latest MIMO support which will help to reach higher data transfer speeds by sending and receiving multiple data stream at the same time.Intel XMM7660 will be available from 2019.
